Frequently asked

Answers to the questions we hear most.

What does Dossier do?

Dossier is a privacy-first iPhone camera. It blurs every face in your recording in real time, optionally pitch-shifts voices, and produces tamper-evident SHA-256 receipts so you can prove a clip wasn't altered later.

It's built for three kinds of work where pointing an unredacted lens at a person is a real problem: real-estate showings, paralegal/legal evidence capture, and journalism.

Does Dossier upload my recordings anywhere?

No. Dossier has no servers. Face detection, voice processing, captions, and SHA-256 hashing all run on your iPhone. The only network requests happen when you tap a Share button — and even then, what's shared is whatever you chose, sent to whatever app you chose, by iOS's standard share sheet.

See our privacy policy for the full breakdown.

How accurate is the face blur?

Very accurate, but not infallible. Dossier uses Apple's Vision framework, which is highly reliable in normal conditions. Faces at extreme angles, very small in frame, heavily obscured, or under unusual lighting may occasionally slip through.

Two safety nets handle this:

Mark Region (free) — tap to drop a permanent blur box over anything you spot manually.

Safety Pass (Pro) — runs a second look across the finished clip and flags faces missed at frame edges.

For high-stakes recordings, always review before sharing.

What's the difference between Free and Pro?

Free: real-time face blur, voice change, basic library with titles and tags, Mark Region, Face ID app lock toggle. Forever free, no time limits.

Dossier Pro ($9.99 one-time, no subscription): 4K recording, live on-device captions burned into video, the editor (Trim + Mark Region), agent/agency watermarks, listing-name prompts, SHA-256 receipt PDF exports, dual-aspect and dual-camera recording, photo import & redact, Safety Pass.

See the pricing comparison.

Is Dossier Pro a subscription?

No. Dossier Pro is a one-time purchase. Buy once, own forever. The "Restore Purchases" button in the paywall recovers your purchase on a new device or fresh install.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds for in-app purchases are processed by Apple, not by us. Use Apple's standard tool at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides based on their refund policy — but they're generally generous if you ask within 14 days of purchase.

Why isn't 4K working on my phone?

Two likely reasons:

1. You don't have Dossier Pro. 4K is a Pro feature. The resolution picker in Settings stays available but reverts to 1080p with a paywall prompt if you tap 4K without Pro.

2. Multi-camera features are on. Most iPhones can't run multi-cam (dual-aspect or dual-camera) at 4K. If you have a multi-cam feature enabled, the resolution falls back to 1080p for that recording. Disable multi-cam in Settings if you want 4K single-camera output.

The app crashed — how do I report it?

Open the app, go to Settings → Diagnostics → Last crash. Tap the crash report to share it via Mail or any messaging app. There's no auto-upload — sharing the report is your explicit action.

Then email us with the report attached and we'll investigate.

I sent a clip to WeChat and the receipt PDF was missing.

That was a known bug. As of version 1.1 (build 3+), Dossier bundles the clip and the receipt into a single .zip file before handing it to the share sheet, so third-party messaging apps that only accept one item per share will get both files reliably. If you're seeing this on an older build, please update via the App Store.

Does Dossier work on iPad?

Not currently. Dossier is iPhone-only — the multi-camera pipeline and the form factor are designed around the iPhone camera array. iPad support may come in a future version if there's demand.

Can I record audio without video?

Not in v1.0. Dossier is a camera app — every recording captures both video and audio. If you only want the audio later, you can extract it from the exported video using QuickTime or any audio editor.

I'm a real-estate agent / paralegal / journalist — can I get a bulk license?

Not yet. Dossier is sold one copy per Apple ID for v1.0. We're considering team/agency licensing for v1.1. Tap to email us if you'd like to be in that conversation when it opens.
