Terms of Service
1. Agreement
By downloading, installing, or using the Dossier iOS app ("Dossier", "the app"), you agree to these terms. The app is published by HamsterAI ("we", "us"). If you do not agree to these terms, do not install the app.
2. The license you get
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Dossier on iPhones you own or control, subject to these terms and Apple's standard EULA.
The license does not grant you the right to:
- Resell, sublicense, rent, or lease Dossier
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app, except as expressly permitted by applicable law
- Remove or alter copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices
- Use Dossier in any way that violates applicable law
3. Lawful use — your responsibility
Recording laws vary by jurisdiction. You are responsible for knowing the law where you record.
Many places require all parties to a private conversation to consent before that conversation can be recorded ("two-party consent"). Other places only require one party to consent. Some recordings — for example, of minors in private spaces, or of trial proceedings, or in certain workplaces — may be prohibited regardless of consent.
Dossier provides redaction tools (face blur, voice change, mark-region) that can reduce the privacy harm of recording, but they do not grant you permission to record. The legal authority to record is something you have to establish for yourself before you press the record button.
By using Dossier you confirm that you have, or will have, the legal authority to capture every recording you make with it.
4. What Dossier does and doesn't promise about redaction
Dossier's face blur uses Apple's Vision framework, which is highly accurate but not infallible. Faces at extreme angles, partially obscured, very small, or under unusual lighting may not be detected and may pass through unblurred. The "Safety Pass" Pro feature does a second-look scan but is also not a guarantee.
You are responsible for reviewing your recordings before sharing them. Dossier provides Mark Region as a tool for manually covering anything the automatic detection missed.
Voice change pitch-shifts audio before it's written to the file but does not transform the speech itself — a determined listener who knows the speaker may still be able to identify them. If absolute audio anonymity is required, consider not recording audio at all.
Tamper-evident receipts (SHA-256 hashes + audit PDFs) prove that a clip has not been bit-for-bit modified after the receipt was generated. They do not prove that the clip is an unedited capture of an event, that the time on the device was accurate, or that the recording was lawful.
5. In-app purchases
Dossier offers an optional one-time purchase ("Dossier Pro") that unlocks additional features described on our pricing page. Purchases are processed by Apple under Apple's standard terms.
Refunds for in-app purchases are issued by Apple, not by us. To request a refund, use Apple's standard process at reportaproblem.apple.com.
6. No warranty
Dossier is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every iPhone model or iOS version.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, HamsterAI is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Dossier — including loss of profits, loss of data, loss of evidence, loss of reputation, or legal exposure resulting from recordings you make with the app.
Our total liability for any claim arising from your use of Dossier will not exceed the amount you paid for the app (or USD $0 for the free tier).
8. Apple's role
This agreement is between you and HamsterAI, not between you and Apple. Apple is not responsible for Dossier or its contents. However, Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always posted at this URL. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
10. Termination
You may stop using Dossier at any time by deleting the app. We may terminate or suspend your license if you violate these terms.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where the user is located, to the extent permitted by applicable consumer-protection law. Disputes that cannot be resolved informally should first be raised by contacting us.
